I’ve just forced myself back into reading last night by reading the first chapter of Never Eat Alone. I haven’t been reading as regularly as I used to. Opting for the quick dopamine doses from YouTube videos and endless “quick” matches on Clash Royale. Hopefully this habit sticks. I discovered this book from a TED talk titled the 3 bones of Success (or something along those lines) where the speaker mentioned how a friend recommended him this book and changed his life.

Recap Setting a goal is important. A good goal must be attainable, yet challenging A goal must have a deadline otherwise it’s just a dream A goal helps focus our efforts and steer ourselves to the desired path There is a template provided to set goals. Set a 3-year long term goal Then set progressively shorter term goals at 1 year, 6 months, 1 month etc. Once your goal has been set… research, research, research What actions need to be done to reach them in the short term and long term Who can help reach those goals Where to find those people How can you help those people so that you can build those relationships (What value can you provide)

This was a really short chapter with a single key message:
Build your network before you need them. The more open to people you are, the higher the chance for opportunities to arise.

The Genius of Audacity: Recap Author’s dad is a working class first generation American immigrant. He wanted to give his son a better life. He didn’t know how, so he asked somebody who does: his boss’s boss. Intrigued, the boss decided to meet with him where he then got an opportunity to enroll his son to a good private school. His dad once saw a bike being thrown away in the neighbourhood.

The Networking Jerk: Recap Don’t be the guy/girl at networking events constantly eye for people to trade business cards with. Connections form when you are genuine. Take time to care for others whether they are your peers, below you, above you, or beneficial to you in the social/professional ladder. Basically don’t be an asshole. Rules Don’t schmooz - people can smell an ass kisser from a mile away Don’t come empty handed - provide value to others without expecting anything in return Don’t treat those under you poorly Be transparent - Openly express your excitement to meet someone famous, or don’t if you’re not.

“Spectacular achievements are often preceded by spectacular preparation”
Do Your Homework - Recap There’s always a barrier to overcome when meeting someone new. It’s difficult to overcome the basic pleasantries and small talk to form a deeper connection. That’s why researching about the person you want to introduce yourself to and find common grounds can help. Find what they are interested in, what problems they might be facing, what they believe in, what they are passionate about.

Key message: Make a list of people you want to connect with. Organize them.
Take Names - Recap It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the contact information. As an example, the author organizes his lists in the context of his goals. He first made his 90-day, 1-year, and 3-year goals. He then created lists of people who he can connect with that can help him achieve those goals. As a newly appointed CEO at the time, he made a list of people in his industry, then a list of potential investors, and finally decision makers in large companies that may potentially buy his own.

Chapter 9 - Warming the Cold Call

Key message: Find ways to relate to the person you want to connect with
Warming the Cold Call - Recap Start with your attitude. Inviting rejection is never going to be easy. First believe that you can win. Getting to know people is a challenge and an opportunity.
Secondly, never cold call. Make it a warm one.
Draft off a reference You have zero credibility with the person you’re cold calling.

Managing the Gatekeeper - Recap In this chapter, the author stresses the importance of close associates and assistants of the people we want to connect with, the ‘gatekeepers’. Oftentimes, executive assistants are more than just assistants. They are trusted associates that have tremendous sway. They manage the calendars of those important people. They schedule in meetings and screen appointments. Honestly, I’m no where near the point where I’d go through any assistant.

Title drop!
Chapter 11 Recap In this chapter the author dives into how he manages to connect with so many people. How does he manage his time and his appointments. As you can probably guess from the chapter title, he doesn’t eat alone! He makes it a point to never do anything alone and finds activities to do with people he wants to connect with. Whether it be meals, a 15-minute coffee, working out.

Never Eat Alone Summary, Notes, and Thoughts

This post contains the consolidated chapter notes and summaries from the book ‘Never Eat Alone’.
I came to the (belated) realization that making and posting individual single chapter summaries is kinda dumb. It psychologically hinders me from continuously reading the book when I feel obligated to write summaries after every chapter. I’ll simply have a unified summary post moving forward where this post will get appended with new additions when I’m ready to write them.

Disclaimer: This post is written partly as a travel journal and a book note. You may focus purely on the ‘Quick Notes’ sections for the book’s summaries.
It’s Easter holiday in Hong Kong right now. I’m on an impromptu 3-day solo trip across the border to Shenzhen following Gemini’s itinerary. I told it to make me a slow-life, reading-focused trip to disconnect. It didn’t disappoint. I decided to make this trip mostly on a whim, seeing that it’s a long weekend and I’m in a bit of a slump.
